The Workflow Ownership Scale
Workflow ownership describes how much of one specific workflow AI reliably completes, from individual assistance to trusted end-to-end autonomy under governance.
How this differs from the maturity band
The five-level Autonomy Maturity Band describes the overall maturity of the assessed workflow or organisation. The four-stage Workflow Ownership scale describes how much of a specific workflow AI reliably completes. They are different outputs and are always labelled separately.
The four Workflow Ownership Stages
Ownership Stage 1
Individual Assistance
Individuals use AI to speed up isolated tasks. The workflow itself is unchanged. Output is fully human owned and human reviewed.
Ownership Stage 2
Repeatable AI-Assisted Tasks
AI is embedded into repeatable steps within the workflow. Use is consistent across a team. Humans still own end to end delivery and quality checks.
Ownership Stage 3
Supervised Workflow Ownership
AI runs the workflow end to end with human review at defined checkpoints. Output quality is monitored and handoff points are explicit.
Ownership Stage 4
Trusted End-to-End Autonomy
AI owns the workflow reliably, with governance, monitoring and human escalation. Business impact is measurable and reported at board level.
How to use the scale
Ownership is assigned workflow by workflow, never tool by tool. It sits alongside the 0 to 100 Autonomy Index score and the five Autonomy Maturity Bands described on The Index, and it feeds placement on the Autonomy Quality Matrix™.
