Workflow autonomy is how much of an end-to-end workflow AI can reliably complete. It progresses in four levels, and progress is not automatic.
The four levels of workflow ownership
- Ownership Stage 1, Individual Assistance. AI helps a person complete a step faster. The workflow itself is unchanged.
- Ownership Stage 2, Repeatable AI-Assisted Tasks. Specific tasks are done with AI by default. Handovers and approvals still run manually.
- Ownership Stage 3, Supervised Workflow Ownership. AI executes the workflow end to end; humans review at defined checkpoints.
- Ownership Stage 4, Trusted End-to-End Autonomy. AI owns the workflow and output quality remains acceptable without step-by-step supervision.
When should AI remain supervised?

How to balance autonomy with quality
